Backstabber Blues is Mon Electric Bijou’s fourth album and the follow-up to the unfettered, unpolished and critically acclaimed Bullets In The Penguin (2006, Roast Records). This time around, Saz opted for a more glossy production without completely setting aside the lo-fi approach that helped define MEB’s signature sound. He also teamed up with Christian Aubin (guitar) and Martin Robillard (bass), with whom he worked closely on the previous album, to sugarcoat the blue mood and subject matter of the album. The mammoth plateaus of huge, melodic, yet tightly controlled riffage brings a new heaviness to MEB’s sound – a weight that nicely complements the frail sincerity of Saz’ vocals. Backstabber Blues is, without a doubt, Mon Electric Bijou’s most personal and complete album to date.
